Finding Calm Through Creativity: A Q&A with The Mindful Doodler

Introduction

At Spectrum Support Services, we believe that mindfulness and creativity can be powerful tools for improving mental well-being. For many, traditional meditation can feel challenging—especially for those with busy minds or active lifestyles.

That’s where mindful doodling comes in.

We spoke with The Mindful Doodler, a mother, artist, and mindfulness advocate, to learn how simple doodling techniques can help reduce stress, improve focus, and bring moments of calm into daily life.

Q&A with The Mindful Doodler

I’m a busy mum and step-mum to five children, with one on the way! I use mindful doodling as a way to find moments of calm throughout the day.

I started mindful doodling as a coping tool during a difficult life event just before COVID hit. I began by doodling around affirmations and noticed a hugely positive impact on my mental health and outlook. That was the beginning of my journey, leading to my Mindful Doodling book and courses, which I now offer both online and in person.
My mission is to help people find a few moments of calm daily by reconnecting with their creativity.

I know from experience that traditional silent meditation doesn’t suit everyone. Mindful Doodling offers an active meditation style, making it more accessible for people who struggle to switch off or who prefer a hands-on approach to mindfulness.
Doodling and creative expression allow us to enter a flow state, where the mind naturally quiets while the hands stay busy. This has multiple benefits:

  • Reduces stress and calms racing thoughts
  • Enhances focus and improves concentration
  • Encourages self-acceptance and a sense of playfulness

Studies show that engaging in creative activities can lower anxiety, improve mood, and even boost cognitive function. It’s a simple yet effective way to incorporate mindfulness into daily life.
Yes! One woman who attended my Doodle Journaling classes has ADHD, as does her eldest son. She was amazed at how doodling helped her focus and calm her mind.

She’s now an avid doodler, and her creativity has flourished as a result! Her family even uses doodling as a calming activity together, and she’s seen noticeable benefits in her children as well.
My book is a great starting point—it’s designed so you can complete an activity in just a few minutes, making mindfulness feel achievable rather than another task on a to-do list.
